<![CDATA[Metroid - nes history]]>Sat, 09 Oct 2021 19:25:31 GMThttp://daydreaminstudios.org/gaming-blog-2021--2022/metroid-nes-history

More than 20 years have past since Metroid first blew away NES owners with its clever mixture of platforming, exploration and character upgrades. It went on to become spawn many sequels over the years, becoming a much-loved franchise for Nintendo fans – but nostalgia aside, is Metroid still high-quality by today’s standards?

Stepping into the formidable boots of the intergalactic bounty hunter Samus Aran, you are tasked with defeating the pesky Space Pirates, who've kidnapped the Metroid creatures with the fiendish plan of using them as biological weapons of mass destruction. So, off to planet Zebes you go to restore law and order to the galaxy.

Samus starts out armed with a weedy little peashooter, but before long you’ll stumble across suit upgrades needed to progress further. The first you’ll find will let Samus morph into a ball, allowing her to squeeze through tight spaces with the greatest of ease. Later, you’ll gain other weapons and abilities such as jump boots to help you leap to platforms once out of reach, missiles to open special doors and an ice beam to take out the endless supply of respawning baddies. There are boss fights too, so you'll have to make sure to pick up energy tanks along the way and withstand a few more hits.

Metroid is of course famed for it’s emphasis on exploration, and you’ll find yourself doing a lot of backtracking in order to make your way through, which, thanks to the lack of posted signs and visual cues, you might find frustrating. One of the most annoying things is Metroid's reliance on secret passageways; in this day and age, arbitrarily jumping around, bombing and shooting to find your way to the next section shows the game's age to much the negative effect. This lack of intuitiveness may have proven easy to overlook 20 years ago, but most are going to find it a big turn-off now.

For a game of its era, however, the graphics and sound have weathered reasonably well. The developers employed a complex palette in different sections , and the rocky, industrial and lava themes break up the repetitive nature of exploration. Samus is well-animated and everything plays out smoothly as well, and massive bosses are quite impressive. The sound effects are a bit basic, but the music is decent and you’ll probably find yourself humming along at times.

If you’ve played any of Samus’ more recent 2D adventures you’ll most likely get frustrated by her lack of diagonal shooting skills in this outing. There are countless times when this ability would be useful, and its omission here is to great negative effect.

If you know what you’re doing, then you can complete Metroid easily in a couple of hours, though you're likely to hit several stumbling blocks during your first run. The Virtual Console's save mechanism will take care of maintaining your progress, but the original password feature can also still prove useful.

<![CDATA[Xmen - mojo world sega game]]>Wed, 06 Oct 2021 15:16:43 GMThttp://daydreaminstudios.org/gaming-blog-2021--2022/xmen-mojo-world-sega-game

Description

In a dark future, Mojo has his own TV show where the participants fight to death. He has imprisoned some X-Men from the past to recreate their greatest battles. Wolverine and Rogue have to enter the game and rescue their friends, then defeating Mojo to return back home.

In this platform game, the player starts choosing either Wolverine or Rogue. At each new level beaten, a new X-Men will be available: first Gambit, then Cyclops, Havoc and finally Shard. If one of the X-Men dies, the player has to start the level again, choosing among the remaining X-Men the one to play. After all the X-Men have died, the game is over.

Each character can activate his/her power at will. Wolverine can use his claws, Rogue can fly, Gambit can throw explosive cards, Cyclops will fire optic blasts, Havoc fires plasma blasts and Shard fires energy blasts. The characters have an energy meter and a power meter, which will worn out as they are hit or use their powers, respectively. They can find items to restore their energy and power.

Gameplay consists basically in finding the way out of each of the six levels. Once finding it, the character will face a boss, usually known characters from the comics like Magneto, Fitzroy, a Sentinel, etc.

-Developed by Sega, X-Men: Mojo World is a 2D action game featuring the most popular mutants from the comic books. It was one of the last cartridges to be released for the Master System and, as far as I know it, was available exclusively in Brazil.

In this game, the villain Mojo has kidnapped some members of the X-Men team, who are being held in various theme-based areas. Your task is to save all of your mutant fellows and then seek and defeat Mojo himself. In the beginning, you can control only Wolverine and Rogue, but as you rescue your teammates, you have the option to control them as well: Cyclops, Gambit, Havok and Shard are all selectable characters.

You progress through left-to-right scenarios, collecting items, defeating lots of lesser foes, and facing a boss at the end of each level (all of them familiar faces, like Magneto or the Sentinel). You can always choose the character you wish, and each one has a unique special ability: Rogue can fly, Wolverine can auto-heal, Gambit can throw explosive cards and so on. These mutant powers are incredibly useful, but they have limited use, so you’d better save them for the most difficult moments of the game. X-Men: Mojo World has a pretty adequate degree of challenge overall, and once you learn the basics of the game, everything becomes quite entertaining.

The gameplay has a few drawbacks though: there are occasional tricky jumps, the controls are a bit loose and, most importantly, the characters are seriously unbalanced. While you can easily complete any area with Gambit or Rogue, characters like Cyclops and Shard are total weaklings that cannot even defeat regular enemies without a lot of effort. Simply using these heroes to go anywhere is like a harder difficulty setting in itself. Well, at least it is a nice feature for X-Men fans to play as less mainstream mutants like Havok or Shard in a game.

In terms of graphics, X-Men: Mojo World is very nice. The backgrounds are clear and colorful, each stage looks unique and the sprites, too, are both large and detailed. Granted, the animation may be a bit choppy, but you can instantly recognize your favorite heroes and villains from the comic books. The visuals are, indeed, one of the best aspects of the game. As for the audio, it is nothing spectacular. Only average 8-bit quality tunes and sound effects, none of them particularly memorable.

In general, X-Men: Mojo World is a really good game, one of the best action titles available for the Master System. I honestly didn’t expect anything good when I first played it, but I can say I was pleasantly surprised. Give it a try if you have the chance.

<![CDATA[Neo Geo- Samurai Showdown Review]]>Mon, 04 Oct 2021 15:24:09 GMThttp://daydreaminstudios.org/gaming-blog-2021--2022/neo-geo-samurai-showdown-reviewSAMURAI SHODOWN released on the NEOGEO in 1993, followed by its sequel SAMURAI SHODOWN II in 1994, and the series became a trilogy in 1995 with SAMURAI SHODOWN III. Soon after SAMURAI SHODOWN IV AMAKUSA’S REVENGE came in 1996, and seven years later SAMURAI SHODOWN V was released in 2003, with SAMURAI SHODOWN V SPECIAL releasing the following year in 2004. Never before released to the public, SAMURAI SHODOWN V PERFECT is a mysterious final version of SAMURAI SHODOWN V that is the stuff of legends to SNK fans. Players can select between either Japanese or English MVS arcade versions for each title. Additionally, there are features such as scanlines for that retro flair, save functions, and arcade mode can even be set to FREE MODE meaning no more game overs!
The game is set in the late 18th century, and all the characters wield weapons. The game uses music from the time period, with sounds of traditional Japanese instruments, such as the shakuhachi and shamisen. A refined version of the camera zoom first found in Art of Fighting is used in Samurai Shodown. The game includes portrayal of blood.
The game became renowned for its fast pace. Focusing more on quick, powerful strikes than combos, slow motion was added to intensify damage dealt from hard hits. During a match, a referee holds flags representing each player (Player 1 is white; Player 2 is red). When a player lands a successful hit, the referee lifts the corresponding flag, indicating who dealt the blow.
A delivery man occasionally appears in the background and throws items such as bombs or health-restoring chicken, which can change the outcome
